Integrated Ethics

IntegratedEthics® (IE) is a comprehensive approach to managing ethics in health care organizations. The goal of IE is the continuous improvement of ethics quality.  Providing structures and processes to develop practical solutions for improving ethics quality IE targets three levels of ethics quality through its three core functions: ethics consultation, which targets ethics quality at the level of decisions and actions; preventive ethics, which targets the level of systems and processes; and ethical leadership, which targets the level of environment and culture.

By envisioning new ways of looking at ethical concerns in health care, new approaches for addressing them in all their complexity, and new channels for achieving integration across the system, IE empowers VA facilities and staff to “do the right thing” because it’s the right thing to do.

IE is not designed to handle allegations of unethical practice.   Such matters are handled by other VHA or VA programs or offices such as the Office of the Medical Inspector (clinical matters), the Office of Compliance and Business Integrity (business matters), the Office of Research Oversight (research matters), the Office of the Inspector General (matters relating to waste, fraud, and abuse) and the Office of General Counsel (legal matters, including conflict of interest law and Standards of Conduct matters).

If you have identified an ethical issue or concern that you desire to have addressed please e-mail: VISN15IntegratedEthicsAdvisoryBoard@va.gov.

National Center for Ethics in Health Care (NCEHC)

NCEHC is pleased to announce the release of “I’ve Been Chosen as A Health Care Agent – Now What?” It’s the latest in a series of podcast for Veterans and their loved ones, titled Dialed In: Helping Veterans Take Control of Their Health Care. VA encourages every Veteran to name a health care agent – someone to make health care decisions on their behalf if they become too ill to do so. This podcast discusses how to fulfill the role of health care agent, and decisions you might have to make.
